EN's editorial team naturally holds media salespeople in the highest regard, but we could barely suppress our mirth when hearing how one ad salesman shot himself in the foot with Rowena Stanworth, the 24-year-old proprietor of The Golf House in Clitheroe. "He asked who dealt with advertising and when I told him I did, he said I wasn't old enough," she recalls.

Stanworth, a keen golfer from Barrowford, Lancashire, had struggled for some time to get hold of anything decent to wear on the course, and came up with the idea of selling designer ladies' golf wear via the internet. Her research showed, however, that women were unlikely to buy high-end clothing without trying it on first, so she decided to set up a shop instead.

She visited Europe's largest golf show in Munich to get some ideas for ranges, an experience which confirmed her determination to follow through with her plan. She also decided to add a menswear element, since chaps still make up the majority of golfers.

Stanworth, who had no retail experience, quit her job in Manchester-based Photolink last Autumn and took on part-time work to pay the bills while preparing for the launch - which has been funded to the tune of £50,000 from savings and family assistance.

She settled on Clitheroe because, "It's always busy, and the other shops are all nice, independent, boutiquey ones. And there are lots of golf clubs in the area." The rent is also very reasonable compared to surrounding towns.

A couple of months ago the shop opened its doors, stocking ranges including Ralph Lauren Polo Golf, Tommy Hilfiger, BackTee, Golfino, Millie Fox and Bunker Mentality. She is also the sole UK distributor for Baleno waterproofs.

Stanworth has one full-time employee and is hoping for a first-year turnover of £100,000. To achieve this she does some advertising, but is also strongly reliant on word of mouth - one of her most successful initiatives being a mailshot to 70 local lady golf club captains, enticing them in with a free gift voucher then letting them do the selling for her.
